Protecting the future of trail riding...
BSTRA is the largest equine trails advocacy group in New England. Incorporated in Massachusetts in 1973 expressly for the purpose of trails advocacy, BSTRA continues to work towards the development of a statewide system of multi-use trails. This includes:
- Preserving, clearing, rebuilding and maintaining trails.
- The creation of new and connecting trails.
- Keeping access open to equestrian use.
- Promoting responsible use of trails.
- Facilitating communication, cooperation and goodwill between trail users and landowners.
- Striving to represent horseback riding interests to various land owning agencies.
- Assist in the preparation of plans, surveys and studies to make recommendations.
- Encourage citizen participation in trail stewardship.
- Educating our members on trail etiquette and safety for all trail users.
In the woods and in the political spotlight...
BSTRA takes an active stand on legislation affecting equestrians who keep horses and ride the trails, working to educate subdivisions of government and governmental agencies on all levels. BSTRA is your link to the following organizations and agencies, which help keep us informed on trail issues regionally as well as nationally.
- American Horse Council
- Rails to Trails Conservancy
- Equestrian Land Conservation Resource
- Department of Conservation & Recreation
- American Trails
- Massachusetts Recreational Trails Advisory Board
- Army Corps of Engineers
- Individual towns and various land trusts
